NYC NATURAL HAIR EVENTS: HAIR & HAPPY HOUR AND DISCOVERING MY NATURAL HAIR

I came to New York City as an unemployed college grad almost two years ago with one goal in mind: to make the most of every experience offered to me. For the past year and a half, I haven't held up to my personal standard due to some roadblocks and location issues, but nowas an official New Yorker for two monthsI'm milking this city for all its got!

Starting with the natural hair inspired events I used to watch enviously through Instagram and YouTube, I decided to put myself out there and mix 'n mingle with likeminded naturalistas. On Thursday, May 13th, I made it out to the lush, midtown lounge Le Reve for Hair & Happy Hour sponsored by Dark and Lovely to honor Mo aka MoKnowsHair aka the Queen of Hair Tutorials (at least to me) moving to the Big Apple. The first 50 guests, which I was lucky enough to be one of, received a free cocktail and full-sized Dark and Lovely product swag bags. Between the jam sessions to awesome music, chatting hair and beauty with new people, and making reconnections, the event was super fun and I'm glad I mustered up the courage to attend even though my friends bailed last minute. I've been feeling so daring since I moved here haha!

Two days later, I attended brunch at Piquant NYC for the Brooklyn-based Discovering My Natural Hair Series event which brings likeminded naturals together to partake in a meal and some drinks while discussing matters related to our community. Julian Addo, who runs the events, had Kia aka TheNotoriousKIA host the event and lead a discussion on culture appropriation and black empowerment along with a panel of three Brooklynite males. The conversation got heated from the get-go, but I loved the passion that flowed throughout the room as everyone gave their opinions and depictions of how cultural appropriation and being a black woman in America has had an effect on their lives. Discussions revolving culture (and unlimited mimosas along with breakfast food) are near and dear to my heart so this event was right up my alley. For anyone looking to meet fellow naturals while discussing topics that scratch more below the surface than swapping hair sealing tips, definitely check out this event series and bring your debating skills with you!

It's summertime in the city, so I plan to check out all the great events that inevitably come with warmer weather. Stay tuned to the blog for more reviews of NYC events!

Thanks for reading!

  1. I've seen a couple of other events at other places, but this was my first time in here. It was amazing! Great venue, it's smaller than those bigger places but it is still a fair sized venue with live music nyc. Food was great and I think it's recently renovated - it didn't seem old or anything.
